Southwold’s 1900 pier, which by the end of the century was all but lost, was restored in 2001. It houses the wonderful “Under the Pier Show”, an arcade created by Tim Hunkin which includes the “Autofrisk”, a device to simulate the feeling of being frisked by inflatable rubber gloves. The buses parked outside have lovely cream and green coachwork and beyond them, towards Easton Bavents, the beach strikes north under sandy cliff-like dunes and pastel-shaded beach huts …
…There is a safety about Southwold which the writer Julie Myerson recognised when she remarked that the only things which have never changed in her life are her mother and Southwold.
